Adding and Subtracting Polynomials

In the next example, we combine addition and subtraction of polynomials.

Adding and subtracting polynomials

Perform the indicated operations:

(2x² - 3x) + (x³ + 6) - (x^4- - 6x² - 9)

Solution

Remove the parentheses and combine like terms:

(2x² - 3x) + (x³ + 6) - (x⁴ - 6x² - 9)	= 2x² - 3x + x³ + 6 - x⁴ + 6x² + 9
	= - x⁴ + x³ + 8x² - 3x + 15
